The Athlone film festival is celebrating it's seventh year this year with seven high quality short films from around Ireland on May 3rd in the Athlone IMC cinema starting at 8pm and finishing approximately 10:30pm. Ather the screening there will be a short panel discussion with the film makers and light refreshments. The films this year are: A Simple Killing directed by Jason Branagan While trying to take her own life, Mai is interrupted when a young, pregnant woman in distress calls to her door in desperate need of help. The Wilde Sisters directed by Táine King After dying in a tragic party fire, sisters Emily and Mary Wilde are trapped in purgatory, struggling with denial and painful truths about their lives as they seek a way to finally move on. Trespass directed by Desmond Lynch A young boy witnesses the murder of his father on his doorstep in Belfast, 1976. Years later having never forgotten that day, he seeks revenge as an older man. Upper Current directed by Gregory O'Reilly A hit-and-run spirals into a nightmarish struggle against fate as a man’s desperate attempt to cover his crime leads him into the merciless grip of the open sea. Tuesday May 6th May, 11 am St Jarlath’s Credit Union Schools Playwright Competition Dean Crowe Theatre Transition year students from all around Ireland, have written original one act plays on the theme of ‘Care’. Saturday 10 th May, 3pm Afternoon T Series: ‘Dying Minutes’. Athlone Little Theatre Bailieborough Drama Group present their 2025 confined All-Ireland winning one act play. Set in a pub, this one act answers the question: why would anyone be in a pub on a Monday Morning? We glimpse into a world at which we laugh, empathise and even recognise.
